From Lab to Leaf – How Tissue Culture Plants Are Prepared at Chop n Grow

Many of the rare plants you see at Chop n Grow start life as tissue culture plants.

Tissue culture (often called TC) is a method where plants are grown in sterile lab conditions from tiny pieces of plant tissue. This allows growers to produce rare and unusual plants that would otherwise be very difficult to find.

But what many people don’t realise is that when these plants arrive from the lab, they are extremely delicate and need careful acclimatisation before they are ready for a normal home environment.

That’s where the real work begins.

The Acclimatisation Process

When tissue culture plants arrive, they have been growing in very high humidity, sterile gel, and controlled laboratory conditions and arrive in a sealed clear  bag.

To prepare them for normal growing conditions, they go through a gradual process.

This usually involves:

• Carefully removing the plants from their gel medium and from in their bag
• Gently washing the roots
• Planting them into a suitable substrate such as perlite or stratum
• Providing controlled humidity while they adjust
• Monitoring for new root growth and healthy leaves

This stage can take several weeks depending on the plant variety.

Why This Matters

Moving directly from laboratory conditions into a normal home environment can be a shock for young plants.

By allowing them to acclimatise first, the plants become much stronger and more stable before reaching their new homes.

At Chop n Grow, plants are not listed for sale until they have successfully started this transition process and are showing healthy growth and still then there can be another couple of weeks until its time fore these plants to go to their final home.

Watching Them Grow

One of the most exciting parts of working with tissue culture plants is watching them develop from tiny plantlets into beautiful, mature plants.

Many of the rare varieties available today simply wouldn’t exist in the hobby without tissue culture propagation.

It’s an incredible journey from lab to living room.
