My Favourite Easy-Care Plants: Monstera Love During Lockdown

My Favourite Easy-Care Plants: Monstera Love During Lockdown

If you’ve followed Chop n Grow for a while, you’ll know I’ve got a real soft spot for Monsteras — and it all started back in lockdown.
Like many people, I needed something positive to focus on, and plants quickly became that little slice of calm for me. Before I knew it, I’d fallen head-over-heels for the humble (and not-so-humble!) Monstera.

Why Monsteras stole my heart

Monsteras are the perfect mix of easy-care and seriously impressive.
They don’t demand perfect conditions, they forgive the odd mistake, and they grow into big, beautiful statement plants that make any room feel alive.

From the classic Monstera deliciosa to the more unusual variegated types like Albo or Thai Constellation, they all share the same charm:
✨ They look good
✨ They’re beginner-friendly
✨ And they’re surprisingly low maintenance

No wonder so many of us turned into plant-people during lockdown!

Are Monsteras easy to look after? 100% yes.

Here’s what won me over:

💧 Watering: They don’t want drowning — just a good drink when the top couple of inches of soil feel dry.
☀️ Light: Bright, indirect light keeps them happiest, but they’ll tolerate a bit of lower light too.
🌱 Feeding: During the warmer months they appreciate a feed now and then. In winter? I leave them be.
❄️ Winter care: As they get bigger, Monsteras use water more slowly. Mine barely need watering through the colder months, and the feeding gets reduced by half.

They really are a grower’s best friend — especially when life’s busy.

My lockdown Monstera story

One of the first plants that truly hooked me was the Monstera Albo. Watching those fresh new leaves unfurl and the white patches appear, felt like magic, and it made each new growth something to look forward to.

That joy is what pushed me toward collecting rare plants — and eventually, starting Chop n Grow so I could share them with all of you.

Quick Monstera Care at a Glance

  • ✔ Bright, indirect light

  • ✔ Water when the top soil dries

  • ✔ Don’t overwater (Monsteras hate soggy roots!)

  • ✔ Light feed in spring and summer

  • ✔ Less watering in winter

  • ✔ Wipe leaves to help them shine and grow

Why I still recommend Monsteras today

Whether you’re brand new to plants or you’ve been collecting for years, a Monstera is one you’ll never regret bringing home. They’re forgiving, rewarding, and always eye-catching — everything an easy-care plant should be.

If you’re looking for something low-maintenance with a big personality, Monsteras are genuinely one of the best places to start.
